A Pace Nobody Asked For

Here is something most people have never once thought about, and it is worth a quiet minute.

Your speed is not private.

You probably experience it as an internal matter. A thing happening inside you, in your chest and your thinking and your list, and something you are managing quietly and mostly on your own.

It is not. It is out in the room. It is in how you cross a floor, how long you stay in a doorway, what your hands do with a cup, how quickly the next sentence arrives after the last one.

And the people around you take it in continuously, the way a room takes in temperature. Nobody decides to. Nobody agrees to. It arrives and it lands, and within a few minutes the household is moving at something close to the speed of the fastest person in it.

That is not a fault. It is how people are built, and it works in the other direction just as well: a genuinely unhurried person coming into a room will slow four other people down without saying anything at all.

So there is something here that is worth knowing, and it is neither a guilt nor a burden. It is more like finding out you have been holding a door open for years without realizing there was a door.

The effect of righteousness

There is a line in Isaiah that puts this in a way I have never found anywhere else, and the word that matters is effect.

And the work of righteousness shall be peace; and the effect of righteousness quietness and assurance for ever. (Isaiah 32:17, King James Version)

The effect of righteousness.

An effect is not a thing anybody does. It is what happens because of what a person is. A fire has an effect on a room and it is not trying to. It gives off heat because of what it is, and everybody nearby is warmer whether or not they came for warmth.

And the effect named here is quietness and assurance. Not quietness as in silence. Quietness as in a settledness that other people can be near.

Which tells you two things at once. What a person carries has an effect on the people around them, and that is not a strange spiritual claim, it is simply true and everybody has felt it. And the effect God attaches to righteousness is a settledness that is felt rather than announced.

You are giving off something in every room you cross, and it has never once been possible to keep a pace to yourself. Isaiah 32:17 speaks of an effect rather than an act, and it is the Holy Spirit who makes that a hopeful thing to know rather than one more thing to watch.

It goes both ways and that is the good news

Now I want to sit on the encouraging half of this, because a person reading it quickly will hear only the first half and go away carrying something heavy.

If pace is contagious, then it is contagious in the direction you choose as well.

That is not a small thing. It means the slowest person in a house has a disproportionate effect, and it means the effect does not require anybody to be told anything, and it means nobody has to have a conversation about the speed of the household in order for the speed of the household to change.

One person walking across a room slowly changes a room. Not by making a point. By being at a different speed in a place where speed is shared.

You are able to change a room without saying anything to anybody in it, and that has never once required a family meeting. Isaiah 32:17 attaches quietness and assurance to an effect rather than to an instruction. The Spirit of God is the one who makes something as small as a slow walk across a kitchen carry weight in a house.

And let me say plainly to the person who has just started feeling responsible for everybody's nerves. That is not what this is. Nobody is being told that the atmosphere of their household is their job.

You are not carrying the whole house on your shoulders, and no room's peace has ever been made to rest on one person's ability to be calm. The written word makes the quietness an effect of righteousness rather than a performance by the righteous, and His Spirit is entirely able to give a home something nobody in it had to manufacture.

Half speed, once, across one room

Now the practical part, and it is deliberately almost nothing.

Walk to the next room at half the speed it would have been.

That is all. Not all day. One journey across one house, at half the pace, with nothing announced and nothing explained.

Half speed is the right instruction because it is measurable. Slower is not measurable and a person cannot obey it. Half you can feel, and you will feel it, and it will feel absurd and slightly theatrical from the inside.

From the outside it will look completely normal. That gap between how it feels and how it looks is the whole reason nobody does this, and it closes after about three tries.

Then watch what happens to whoever is in the room you walk into. Not to make a point of it. Just notice.

You are able to walk one hallway differently, and no household has ever needed more than one person moving at a different speed to feel it. Isaiah 32:17 names quietness as a thing that comes off a person rather than out of them. The same Spirit who inspired that line is well able to work through the way somebody crosses a floor.
