He Left a Crowd That Still Had Needs in It

Let me say your objection first, so you know I have heard it.

You are not going to tell me your week is too full, because you do not think that is the problem. The problem, as you see it, is that the need is real. There is a difference and it matters. A week full of hobbies can be trimmed. A week full of people who are genuinely struggling cannot, because trimming it means somebody is not helped.

So when a message like this comes along and starts talking about taking one thing off, you close it. Not out of pride. Out of arithmetic. Every single item on that list is a person, and there is no version of the sum where a person comes off it and nothing is lost.

I know. I want to walk you into a scene instead of arguing with you.

Because here is what I have noticed. Most people in your position have never actually seen it done. Not once. You have never watched a person you respect step back while the need was still live, and have it be right. Every example you have is somebody who burned out and collapsed, or somebody who drifted off and it was quietly noted.

Nobody has shown you the third thing. So let me.

A day with no end in it

Mark 6. The disciples have just come back from being sent out. They have news, and they are trying to tell Him about it, and this is the situation.

And he said unto them, Come ye yourselves apart into a desert place, and rest a while: for there were many coming and going, and they had no leisure so much as to eat. (Mark 6:31)

Read that last clause again, because it is a description of a week and not of a mood. Many coming and going. No leisure so much as to eat.

That is not a complaint about feeling stretched. It is a factual account of traffic. People arriving, people leaving, more arriving. The need had no bottom to it, which is what a real need does, and there was never going to be a moment when the last person was dealt with and the room went quiet.

And Jesus does not say let us push through. He does not say the harvest is plentiful so let us stay. He says come apart and rest.

You are inside a situation the Lord Himself called unsustainable, and it was named as traffic rather than as a weakness in you. Mark 6:31 records the need having no bottom and Him responding to that fact rather than to anybody's feelings about it, and the Holy Spirit is the one who lets a person hear that as accuracy instead of as an accusation.

Now watch what happens next, because this is the part I want you to actually see.

They followed and He went anyway

They get in a boat to go somewhere quiet. The crowd works out where they are going, runs around the lake on foot, and gets there first.

The need does not accept the answer. That is worth saying plainly. The crowd is not being wicked. They are sick and they have questions and they have walked a long way, and they are waiting on the shore when the boat lands.

And He has compassion on them and He teaches them and He feeds them, all five thousand, which is the part everybody knows.

You are not being asked to stop caring, and the compassion was never the thing that had to go. Mark 6:34 records Him moved with compassion at the sight of the very crowd that had chased Him. The Holy Spirit is the one who keeps a person tender while they are learning to end a day.

But the chapter does not end there.

And when he had sent them away, he departed into a mountain to pray. (Mark 6:46)

He sent them away.

The same crowd. The same evening. The need had not been abolished. Nobody had been cured of being human. He fed them, and then He ended it, on purpose, and went up a mountain by Himself, and the people who had run around a lake to find Him went home.

You have permission that was demonstrated rather than merely stated, and it was already lived out before it was ever explained. Mark 6:46 puts an ending on a day that still had people in it, and the Spirit of God is the one who makes a scene like that stop being about somebody else.

That is the third thing. Not collapse. Not drift. An ending, chosen, with the need still standing there.

What the need is not

Here is the part I want to press on, because I think it is the real chain.

A need that never runs out starts to function like an employer. It sets your hours. It decides when the work is finished. It is never satisfied, because it structurally cannot be, and so it can never release you, and a thing that can never release you has become an authority over you whether or not you ever agreed to that.

And it is a very good disguise, because it looks exactly like love from the outside, and quite a lot like love from the inside too.

But love is a thing you give. An authority is a thing you obey. Those are different, and one of them belongs to God alone.

Know ye not, that to whom ye yield yourselves servants to obey, his servants ye are to whom ye obey? (Romans 6:16)

That verse is usually preached about sin, and it is about sin, and the mechanism it names is broader than sin. Whatever sets your hours has your obedience.

You have one Master and the need is not it, and that was settled at the cross and not at your kitchen table. Romans 6:16 names obedience as the thing that marks a master. The Holy Spirit is the one who can show a person which voice has actually been setting their week.
