A Place That Has Never Once Been Quiet

There is a sound where you live or where you work, and it does not stop.

A compressor. A fan on a unit. A road. A generator. A machine on a floor that runs three shifts and has run three shifts since before you started. It does not vary and it does not pause, and the only time you have ever heard it stop was an outage two winters ago that everybody remembers.

And you have read the books.

That is the part I want to get at. Every serious book about the inner life recommends silence, and the recommendation is sincere, and every one of those books is describing a resource you do not have access to and cannot go out and obtain.

So a man in your position does one of two things. He either concludes that the deeper things are for other people, quietly and without complaint, or he keeps trying to manufacture a quiet that his life does not contain.

I want to offer a third thing, and it comes out of the one passage everybody quotes about this, read more carefully than it usually is.

What the still small voice actually was

1 Kings 19. Elijah is on a mountain, worn out and afraid, and God tells him to stand there.

And, behold, the Lord passed by, and a great and strong wind rent the mountains, and brake in pieces the rocks before the Lord; but the Lord was not in the wind: and after the wind an earthquake; but the Lord was not in the earthquake: And after the earthquake a fire; but the Lord was not in the fire: and after the fire a still small voice. (1 Kings 19:11-12)

Everybody knows the phrase. Very few people notice what the passage is arguing.

It is not saying that God is quiet and therefore requires a quiet setting. It is saying something almost opposite. Three enormous noises happen, and the passage tells you three times that He was not in them, which means those noises were not the problem and were not the point. They were not competing with Him. They were simply not Him.

And then a still small voice, and the Hebrew there is closer to a thin, fine sound, and it is not described as arriving in a silence. It is described as arriving after all of that, on a mountainside that had just been torn apart.

So the passage is not a lesson in acoustics. It is a lesson about what to listen for.

You are not in a place He cannot reach, and it was never the volume that stood in the way. 1 Kings 19:12 tells us three times where He was not, and never once says that the noise was blocking anything, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes that read as an opening rather than as a technicality.

I want to press on that, because it matters for a man who works in a shop.

The wind, the earthquake and the fire were all far louder than anything you live with, and none of them is treated as an obstacle. They are treated as mistaken places to look. The passage never once tells Elijah to find somewhere quieter.

You have been looking for a condition instead of a voice, and it was always the looking rather than the listening. 1 Kings 19 corrects where a man is looking rather than the level of the sound around him. The Spirit of God is the one who can retrain an ear that has been waiting for the wrong thing.

What actually blocks it

If it is not volume, then what does get in the way?

In my experience it is speed, not sound.

A man can hear from God perfectly well over a running machine. What he cannot do is hear anything while moving at pace between eleven things, and that is true in a silent room as much as a loud one.

Which is quite good news for you, because speed is adjustable and a compressor is not.

You are holding the one lever that actually moves, and it was always the one within reach. Job 37:14 asks a man to stand still rather than to change his surroundings, and the Holy Spirit is the one who can slow somebody down in a place that is never going to slow down with them.

So the practice is not to find a quiet place. It is to stop moving for a minute in the place where a person is already standing.

Same yard. Same racket. Standing still.

Stand still, and consider the wondrous works of God. (Job 37:14)

Stand still. Not go somewhere still.

You are able to be still where you stand, and the stillness was never a property of the room. Job 37:14 asks for a person to stop rather than for a place to quieten. The Holy Spirit is the one who can make a minute of not moving do what four years of looking for a quiet room did not.

And one plain thing, said once. If what is running is not a machine but something in your own head, and if some part of you has been thinking about not being here, tell one person today. In the United States you can call or text 988, at any hour. Anywhere else, your local crisis line, or one person whose number you know by heart. That is the right next thing and God is entirely in it.
