A Good Work That Was Not Mine to Do

Let me put you exactly where you are.

Somebody has asked you to do something and it is good. Not good in a vague way. Actually good, with real people behind it and a real gap it would fill, and if it does not get done something is genuinely worse.

You do not want to say no. You have no argument. Every reason you can think of sounds like an excuse when you say it out loud, and the ones that do not sound like excuses sound like self importance.

So you are stuck, and being stuck feels like being wrong.

I want to tell you that you are not stuck, and that the tool you are missing is not a better reason. It is a different question.

You have been asking whether this work is worth doing. It is. That question is settled and it was never in doubt.

The question you have not asked is whether it is yours.

He left a town that wanted Him

Luke 4. Jesus has been in Capernaum. He has healed Simon's mother in law, and then at sunset the whole town brings everybody who is sick, and He lays hands on every single one of them.

In the morning He goes out to a solitary place. And then this happens.

And the people sought him, and came unto him, and stayed him, that he should not depart from them. And he said unto them, I must preach the kingdom of God to other cities also: for therefore am I sent. (Luke 4:42-43)

Look at what they are doing. They stayed him, that he should not depart. They are physically trying to keep Him there, and they are not villains, they are people who have just seen their sick relatives healed and who want more of that.

And He says no.

Not because their need is fake. Their need is completely real. He says no and He gives one reason, and the reason is not about the need at all.

Therefore am I sent.

You are looking at a real need that is still not your assignment, and both of those were true at the same time from the beginning. Luke 4:43 has Him decline a genuine request and give being sent as the whole reason, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes that land in somebody who has been trying to find fault with a good thing so they can refuse it.

And I want you to notice what He did not say, because I have watched people twist themselves trying to produce it.

He did not say the work was unimportant. He did not say somebody else would definitely do it. He did not explain how the town would manage. He did not apologize.

He named what He was sent to do, and He went.

Sentness is the only reason that holds

Here is why this matters practically, and not only devotionally.

Every other reason for declining a good work can be argued with. Too busy can be answered with a rearranged schedule. Not qualified can be answered with training. Not the right season can be answered with a different start date. Somebody will always have a solution, because they are helpful people and the need is real.

Sentness cannot be argued with. It is not a resource question, so no amount of resource solves it.

That is why He used it. It is the only kind of no that does not invite a negotiation.

But it has a cost, and the cost is that you have to actually know what you were sent to do.

You have a reason available that nothing can dissolve, and it was assigned to you rather than argued into place. Luke 4:43 gives sentness as the reason and offers nothing else alongside it. The Spirit of God is the one who can make an assignment clear enough to say in one sentence.

Most people cannot say what they were sent to do. Not because they have no calling, but because nobody has ever asked them to put it in a sentence, and a thing that has never been said in a sentence cannot be used in a conversation.

You have a calling already, and it was given before anybody thought to ask you for a word about it. Luke 4:43 has a man state his sending in six words because He already knew it, and the Holy Spirit is the one who can bring a thing a person has always half known up into language.

Say it in one sentence

So this is the work, and it is smaller than it sounds.

Write down, in one sentence, the thing you believe God has given you to do in this season. Not for life. This season.

It does not have to be grand. I am here to raise these two children and be steady for them. I am here to teach that class properly. I am here to look after my mother well while she has left.

Anything that fits in a sentence and is true.

Then the next request that arrives gets held next to that sentence, and most of the agonizing disappears, because the question stops being is this good and becomes is this that.

To every thing there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven. (Ecclesiastes 3:1)

A purpose, singular, attached to a season, which means there is a shape to what is yours now and it is not everything.

You have a purpose with edges on it, and the edges were drawn by Him rather than by your capacity. Luke 4:43 has Him decline out of an assignment rather than out of a limit. The Holy Spirit is the one who lets a person see a boundary as a gift instead of as a shortfall.
