A Stopping Made for You

Watch what happens in you the next time somebody tells you to rest.

Somebody means it kindly. They say you need to take a break, or they send you an article, or they say it from the front of a room on a Sunday. And something in your chest goes slightly tight.

It is not disagreement. You agree completely. That is not the reaction.

The reaction is the one a person has in front of a standard. A new item, added to a list that was already too long, with your name against it and a small black mark beside it for all the years you have not managed it.

So rest arrives at your door wearing the clothes of an obligation, and you do what a tired person does with a new obligation. You say yes and you file it, and nothing changes, and now there is one more thing you are behind on.

I want to give you one sentence out of Mark tonight, and I want to be careful with the order of it, because the order is where everything is.

Read the direction it points

Here is the line.

And he said unto them, The sabbath was made for man, and not man for the sabbath. (Mark 2:27, King James Version)

Made for man.

Stop on the word for. That is the whole verse and everything else in it is holding that word up.

A thing made for you is a thing made in your favor. It exists on your side. A gift is made for a person, a coat is made for a person, a house is built for the people who will live in it. The maker had that person in mind and made the thing to suit them.

And then the second half, which shuts the door on the reading most people carry: and not man for the sabbath. People were not made to serve the stopping. The stopping was made to serve people.

So every time rest has arrived in your life as a demand, the arrow was pointing the wrong way. Not slightly. Completely backwards, all the way round, the exact reversal that sentence exists to correct.

You are being handed something made in your favor, and it has never once been a standard set up for you to fall short of. Mark 2:27 says the sabbath was made for man rather than man for it, and it is the Holy Spirit who turns that arrow around inside somebody who has been reading it the other way since childhood.

Who He said it to, and why that matters

Look at the situation He says it in, because He did not say it into a vacuum.

His disciples had walked through a field on the sabbath and eaten some grain, and the people watching had a rule about it, and the rule was being applied to hungry men.

That is the scene. A genuine command from God, real and good, being handled in a way that took food out of the hands of people who needed it. Rest turned into a thing that costs rather than a thing that gives.

And He does not defend the men by lowering the command. Notice that, because it matters. He does not say the sabbath is unimportant. He tells them what it is for, and what it is for settles the argument on its own.

You are looking at a good thing that was pointed at you and got turned around, and the good of it has never once been in question. Mark 2:27 corrects the direction rather than dismissing the day. The Spirit of God is the one who can restore a gift to somebody without lowering it to do so.

I want to say something to the person who has quietly concluded they are just not a restful sort of person. That conclusion did not come from Scripture. It came from failing at a rule that was never a rule, and a verdict reached on the wrong evidence is not a verdict at all.

You are not behind on anything here, and no year of not managing it has ever put you in arrears on a gift. The written word puts the making on God's side and the receiving on ours, and His Spirit is well able to take a black mark off somebody who has been keeping their own score for a long time.

A gift is received, not achieved

Now what actually changes on a Thursday, because a corrected arrow has to land somewhere practical.

If the stopping is a rule, then the question is how well you did it. Long enough. Often enough. Properly enough. Every one of those questions is a scoreboard, and every scoreboard produces the tightness in the chest.

If the stopping is a gift, then there is only one question, and it is whether you take it.

Ten minutes taken as a gift is a complete success. There is no partial credit and no minimum, because a gift does not have a pass mark. That is not a lowering of the standard. It is what the word for means.

And here is the odd, practical consequence: taking it once, properly, as a gift, does more than four attempts at keeping it as a rule. The four attempts leave a person more convinced they are the sort who fails. The one taking leaves a person who has received something.

You are able to receive this rather than perform it, and there has never once been a pass mark attached to something made in your favor. Mark 2:27 sets the whole arrangement on the giving side. The same Spirit who inspired the sentence is not standing behind anybody with a stopwatch.
