Disappointing Somebody Who Was Kind to Me

This one is harder than the others and I am not going to pretend otherwise.

The person asking is not a stranger and is not somebody with a habit of asking. It is the woman who came round every week the year everything fell apart. It is the man who covered your work when your father was dying and never once mentioned it afterward.

And now they have asked for something, and it is genuinely too much, and you are going to say yes.

Not because they have pressured you. They have not. They would be horrified to know you are struggling with this, which is part of what makes it so hard.

You are going to say yes because somewhere inside you a bill exists, and this request looks like the bill arriving.

I want to talk about that bill, because I think it is the whole problem, and because I do not think God recognizes it.

Who the account is with

Paul is writing about how he and his companions conducted themselves in Thessalonica, and he says something about audience.

But as we were allowed of God to be put in trust with the gospel, even so we speak; not as pleasing men, but God, which trieth our hearts. (1 Thessalonians 2:4)

Not as pleasing men, but God.

Now that verse is usually applied to popularity, and it is about popularity, and I want it for something more specific.

It is a statement about who holds the account. Paul is saying that his conduct is settled with God, and that once it is settled there, no separate settlement is owed to anybody else.

That is worth holding still for a moment, because a person carrying a debt of gratitude has quietly opened a second account, and now they are trying to satisfy two.

One with God, which they hope is in order, and one with a person who was kind to them, which never closes because there is no mechanism in it for closing.

You have one account, and the second one was never opened by anybody but you. 1 Thessalonians 2:4 settles conduct with God alone and treats a second audience as a distortion rather than as a duty, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes that arrive as relief rather than as a license to be ungrateful.

A gift is not an invoice

Here is the thing that has to be said plainly.

When that woman came round every week, she was not extending credit. She would tell you so herself and she would be upset that it needed saying.

What she gave you was a gift. A gift is a completed act. It is finished at the moment it is given, and nothing is outstanding afterward, and that is the entire difference between a gift and a loan.

But gratitude does something strange in a person who has been on the receiving end of a lot of help. It converts the gift into a debt, quietly, because being permanently in receipt of something feels unbearable, and a debt at least has a shape.

So the debt is not something they created. It is something you created, out of a discomfort with having been helped.

And now it is being called in, by somebody who does not know they are calling anything in, for an amount neither of you agreed.

You are not ungrateful, and it was never a shortage of thankfulness that built this. 1 Thessalonians 2:4 puts the whole account with God and leaves human kindness free to stay kindness. The Holy Spirit is the one who can undo a ledger a grateful person made out of a gift.

Freely ye have received, freely give. (Matthew 10:8)

Freely received. That is the phrase to hold. Not received on terms.

You have received something that was finished when it was given, and it closed at the moment it was handed over. Matthew 10:8 describes receiving freely as the normal condition of a believer, and the Spirit of God is the one who can take the invoice out of a memory that was only ever a kindness.

Gratitude and compliance are different things

So how do you honor what they did, if not by saying yes?

By thanking them for it. Actually thanking them, out loud, for the specific thing, which most people never do, because the debt version of gratitude replaces words with compliance.

That is the swap I want to undo. Years of paying in yeses, and possibly not once the sentence itself.

So here is the shape of it. Decline the request, and separately, in the same conversation or the next one, thank them for the old thing by name.

I cannot do this one. And I have wanted to say for a long time that the year my father was ill, nobody showed up the way you did, and I have never properly thanked you for it.

That second half is not a softener attached to a no. It is a separate and much larger thing, and it is the thing they would actually want.

You are able to honor somebody without obeying them, and the honoring was always the part that had been missing. 1 Thessalonians 2:4 separates a settled account from the pleasing of people and keeps both love and honesty intact. The Holy Spirit is the one who can put words into a mouth that has been paying in silence.
