Be Still in a House That Will Not Be

Every piece of advice you have ever been given about stillness assumed you had access to some.

Get up before the household. Find a quiet corner. Take yourself somewhere. Put twenty minutes aside in a room with the door shut.

And every single one of those is written by somebody with a spare room, or an hour, or a house that goes quiet at some point, and you have none of those things and are not going to get them this year.

There are small children, or thin walls, or a shift pattern that means somebody in the building is always asleep and somebody is always awake. Or there is a person in the house who needs the television on. Or the flat above simply exists.

So the advice arrives, and it is good advice for somebody, and what it does to you is add a small extra failure to a day that was already full.

What the noise was in the psalm

There is a verse everybody quotes about being still, and almost nobody reads the ten verses in front of it.

Psalm 46 is not a quiet psalm. It opens with the earth being removed, mountains carried into the middle of the sea, waters roaring and troubled, mountains shaking. Then nations raging and kingdoms moved. It is one of the loudest passages in the whole book.

And then, in the middle of all that, this.

Be still, and know that I am God: I will be exalted among the heathen, I will be exalted in the earth. (Psalm 46:10, King James Version)

The stillness is not the absence of noise. It cannot be. The noise is still happening in the same psalm, four lines earlier, at the volume of the sea taking a mountain.

Psalm 46:10 is spoken into a racket rather than into a silence, and the Holy Spirit is the one who lets a person hear that as an actual possibility rather than as a nice idea for somebody with a study.

You are able to be still inside noise, and the verse has never once required the room to go quiet first. Psalm 46:10 arrives four lines after waters roaring and mountains shaking, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes a stillness available that does not depend on a household cooperating.

What still actually means here

So if it does not mean silent, what does it mean.

The word carries the sense of dropping your hands. Letting go. Ceasing from your own effort, particularly the effort of holding something together.

That is a completely different instruction from be quiet, and it is one you can obey in a room with a television on and two children arguing about a coat.

Because what actually exhausts you in a loud house is not the decibels. It is the constant low management. Tracking who is where, what is about to go wrong, what will be needed in eleven minutes. That is the thing that never stops, and it does not stop when the noise stops either, which is why the quiet evenings are not as restful as you expected.

Be still is an instruction to stop holding, and Psalm 46:10 pairs it with know that I am God, which is where the holding goes, and the Holy Spirit is the one who takes something that was in a person's hands.

You are being asked to drop your hands rather than lower the volume, and it has never once been about the room. The written word says be still and know that I am God, which puts the ceasing next to the knowing, and the Spirit of God is the one who takes a weight while the noise carries on around it.

Two minutes, in it

So the assignment today is two minutes, sitting down, in the noise.

Not with headphones. Not waiting for a gap. Not going anywhere. Psalm 46:10 was spoken over roaring water rather than over a silence, and the Holy Spirit does not require better conditions than that. Wherever you are, whatever is happening, sit down and stay for two minutes.

The children may talk to you. That is fine. The television carries on. That is fine. You are not trying to achieve anything in the two minutes and you are not going to feel serene at the end of them.

What you are doing is proving something specific: that God is available in this room, at this volume, without the household changing at all. Psalm 46:10 was spoken over roaring water, and the Holy Spirit does not require better conditions than that.

Two minutes is small enough that you can actually do it, and doing it once is what breaks the belief that you need somewhere else.

You are able to meet Him here, and He has never once been waiting somewhere quieter. Psalm 46:10 puts the stillness inside the storm rather than after it, and the Spirit of God is the one who is genuinely in a loud front room at five thirty.

You have been given a command your house can already obey, and it never once asked the house for anything. Psalm 46:10 is spoken into a psalm of roaring waters and shaking mountains rather than into a settled room, and the Holy Spirit is the one who carries that into a kitchen at the loudest part of a day.
