Not One Empty Square

This message is for the reader whose calendar has no empty square in it and who cannot work out which of eleven genuinely good things they are allowed to put down

Go and look at this week. Actually look, on the phone or on the wall, whichever one is the real one.

There is not one empty square in it.

And here is the part that makes this hard rather than simple: everything in there is good. That is the whole problem. If your week were full of nonsense you would have cleared it years ago. It is full of a school run and a sick relative and a rotation you volunteered for and a friend who is going through something and a thing at work that genuinely matters.

Nobody can tell you which of those to drop, because from the outside they all look like love. And they are love. Every one of them.

So you keep all of it, and the week has no air in it, and you have started to be slightly worse at all eleven things than you were when there were eight.

He does not tell her the work is wrong

There is a scene everybody knows and almost everybody hears as a telling off, and I do not think it is one.

Martha is doing a great deal of work, for good reasons, for the right person, in her own house. And she comes and asks the Lord to make her sister help, and this is the reply.

And Jesus answered and said unto her, Martha, Martha, thou art careful and troubled about many things: But one thing is needful: and Mary hath chosen that good part, which shall not be taken away from her. (Luke 10:41-42, King James Version)

Notice what He does not say.

He does not say the work was unnecessary. He does not say she should not have been serving. He does not tell her the meal did not matter, and He certainly does not suggest that hospitality is a lesser thing, because He accepted it.

What He names is the state she is in: careful and troubled about many things. And then He says one thing is needful, and Luke 10:42 puts that in the singular in a house where a dozen things were genuinely happening, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes that a relief rather than a rebuke.

You are not being told your week is wrong, and the good things in it have never once been the accusation. Luke 10:41 names the state rather than the work, and the Holy Spirit is the one who can separate a person from their own calendar for long enough to look at it.

Nobody is coming to give you permission

Here is the practical reason nothing ever comes off that calendar.

Every single item on it is attached to a person. Which means that removing it feels like removing a person, and so you wait, unconsciously, for somebody involved to release you. You wait for the rotation to be reorganized, or for the friend to say they are fine now, or for somebody to notice how much you are carrying and intervene.

That is never going to happen. Not out of unkindness. Everybody in your week is looking at their one square. Nobody is looking at the whole grid except you, so nobody else is in a position to give the permission, and Luke 10:42 has the Lord Himself handing out the permission rather than waiting for the household to reach a consensus, which the Holy Spirit still does.

You are the only one who can take something off. That is not a burden. It is authority.

You are the one who gets to decide, and the permission has never once been coming from somebody else. The written word says Mary hath chosen that good part, which puts a choice in a person's own hands, and the Spirit of God is the one who makes a decision like that feel available rather than selfish.

It does not have to be the right one

Now the thing that actually unlocks this, and it is not what people expect.

You have been trying to work out which one to remove. That is why nothing has been removed. Because the moment you compare eleven good things you enter an argument you cannot win, and the argument itself takes a whole evening, and at the end of it the calendar is unchanged and you are tired.

So do not choose the right one. Choose one. Luke 10:42 protects a choice rather than assessing it, and the Holy Spirit has never once asked anybody to be certain before they were allowed to move.

Any of them. The most easily canceled. The one whose absence nobody will notice. It does not matter, because the point today is not optimizing your week, it is proving to yourself that a square can be cleared at all.

I am serious about this. One removal that changes almost nothing does more for you than a perfect analysis that changes nothing at all, and Luke 10:42 says the good part shall not be taken away from her, which is the Holy Spirit protecting a decision rather than auditing it.

You are able to clear something without having identified the right something, and the analysis has never once been the thing standing in your way. Luke 10:41 has Christ address the troubled state directly rather than reviewing the to-do list, and the Spirit of God is the one who lets a person act before they are certain.

The breakthrough

So here is what I believe is going out over somebody today.

You are allowed to put one down, and nothing in that week was ever handed to you as a complete set. I am not lowering your commitment. Luke 10:41 has the Lord name a woman's troubled state without one criticism of the work she was doing, and it is the Holy Spirit and not my telling who takes the guilt out of a cancellation.

And this, which is the word I came with:

You have the authority here, and it has never once belonged to the rotation. The written word says Mary hath chosen that good part, and the Spirit of God is the one who makes a choice like that available on an ordinary Tuesday to somebody who has not felt able to make one in years.

You are not waiting for a permission that was ever going to arrive, and it was already given. Luke 10:42 has the choosing done by the one sitting rather than by the one keeping the house, and the Holy Spirit is the one who hands a decision back to the person it always belonged to.

Not the right one. Just one. Today, while the calendar is open.

Declare this over yourself

  1. Week with no air in it, you are not a set I was handed whole. Luke 10:41 says thou art careful and troubled about many things, so by the Holy Spirit you do not get all of me in the name of Jesus.
  2. Waiting for somebody to release me, you have no place in this decision. The word says Mary hath chosen that good part, and by the Holy Spirit I am done needing a rotation to give me permission.
  3. Father, You put the choosing in my own hands. Your word says which shall not be taken away from her, so by Your Spirit I clear one square today, and I leave it empty.

Why we ask you to say these out loud

The word this stands on
