He Is Not Somewhere Quieter Than Here

Nobody would say this out loud, and almost everybody behaves as though it were true.

The belief is that God is more available in quiet places.

Say it plainly like that and every believer in the world will disagree with it immediately, because it is straightforwardly false and we all know the doctrine. And then watch the behavior, which is where beliefs actually live.

The behavior is a person waiting until the house is settled before saying anything to Him. It is putting off a real conversation with God until a walk, or a drive, or a moment nobody interrupts. It is treating a loud kitchen as somewhere you cannot properly reach Him from.

None of that is stated. All of it is practiced.

And I want to deal with it doctrinally rather than practically, because this is not a habit problem. It is a belief problem wearing a habit as a coat, and the only thing that shifts a belief is a better one.

Two questions with no answer

Psalm 139 asks something and then spends four verses failing to find an answer.

Whither shall I go from thy spirit? or whither shall I flee from thy presence? If I ascend up into heaven, thou art there: if I make my bed in hell, behold, thou art there. (Psalm 139:7-8)

Two questions, and both of them are rhetorical, and the psalm answers them by exhausting the possibilities.

Heaven. The grave. The wings of the morning. The uttermost parts of the sea. Darkness. He goes through the entire range of places a person could conceive of and reports the same finding at every one.

Thou art there.

Now, notice what kind of statement that is. It is not a promise. A promise is something that will be honored in the future and can be waited on. This is a description of what is presently the case, and it is not conditional on anybody's behavior, location or noise level.

You are somewhere He already is, and it was never going to be otherwise. Psalm 139:8 exhausts every conceivable location and finds Him at each one, and the Holy Spirit is the one who moves that from a doctrine a person agrees with into a thing they act on.

And there is a detail in verse 12 that goes directly at the quiet room.

Yea, the darkness hideth not from thee; but the night shineth as the day: the darkness and the light are both alike to thee. (Psalm 139:12)

Both alike to thee. The psalm names the two conditions that a human being experiences as completely different, and says they are not different to Him at all.

Substitute noise and quiet into that sentence and nothing breaks. The conditions that make an enormous difference to your ability to concentrate make no difference whatsoever to His presence, and treating them as though they did is a small piece of bad theology with large practical consequences.

You have been reading a difference in yourself as a difference in Him, and it was never a difference in Him. Psalm 139:12 says the two conditions are both alike to God rather than merely manageable for Him. The Spirit of God is the one who can correct a belief that a person did not know they held.

What the quiet actually does

I want to be fair to quiet, because I am not arguing against it and it would be foolish to.

Quiet does something real. It makes it easier for you to attend. That is a genuine benefit and it is worth having when it can be had.

But attending and being present are two different parties in the transaction. Quiet improves your attention. It does not improve His attendance, and He was never the variable.

That distinction sounds academic and it changes everything about a Tuesday, because if He is the variable then a loud house is a closed door. If attention is the variable then a loud house is a harder room to concentrate in, which is an entirely different kind of problem and a much smaller one.

You have never once been further from Him in a loud room, and the distance was always about the attending. Psalm 139:7 asks where a person could go to get away and finds nowhere, and the Holy Spirit is the one who is present in exactly the same measure in a kitchen as in a chapel.

And one plain thing, said once and then on we go. If what is loud is not the room but something in your own head, and if some part of you has been thinking about not being here, tell one person today. In the United States you can call or text 988, at any hour. Anywhere else, your local crisis line, or one person whose number you know by heart. That is wisdom and God is entirely in it.

Speak in the room that is here

So the correction is not a technique, it is a practice that enacts the doctrine.

Speak to Him in the loudest room of your day. Not because it is better than a quiet one, and not as a discipline. Because doing it once demonstrates, in your own body, a thing your theology has agreed with for years and your behavior has not.

A belief that has never been acted on is not fully held. That is not a criticism, it is how people work. Say one sentence to Him in a room you would previously have waited to leave, and something gets settled that no amount of agreeing was going to settle.

You are able to act on what you already believe, and the believing was correct the whole time. Psalm 139:8 states His presence at every location as a plain fact. The Spirit of God is the one who turns an agreed doctrine into a thing a person does on a Tuesday afternoon.
