One HourJames 1:17

An Hour That Was Given, Not Taken

This message is for the reader who experiences every hour they keep for themselves as an hour removed from somebody who needed it, and who has no framework in which it arrives as a gift

Try this and watch what your mind does with it.

An hour, this week, that belongs to nobody.

Now notice the question that arrived immediately, before you had even considered which hour it might be.

Where would it come from?

That is the question, and it is asked in a very particular way, and the way is everything. It is not a scheduling question. It is asked the way a person asks about money coming out of a shared account, and the account has a fixed amount in it, and every hour you take is an hour that leaves.

So you go looking, and every hour in the week has somebody standing on it. Not a task. A person. The one who needs picking up, the one who calls on Sundays, the one who is going through something, the one who is small.

And the arithmetic comes out the same every time. Whatever hour you take, somebody gets less.

That is why you have not taken one, and it is not because you are disorganized, and it is not because you do not want one.

It is because you are running a subtraction, and there is no version of a subtraction where a person keeps something for themselves and nobody loses.

I want to show you a verse that changes the direction the hour comes from, because as long as it comes out of the account, you will never take it, and you should not.

The direction is down, not sideways

Here is the line.

Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and cometh down from the Father of lights, with whom is no variableness, neither shadow of turning. (James 1:17, King James Version)

Cometh down.

Everything is in that direction. Not across. Not out of. Down, from above, from outside the room entirely.

And that changes the arithmetic completely, because a thing that comes down from outside is not subtracted from anything inside. Nobody at your table is fractionally poorer because something arrived from a different direction.

This is not a technicality. It is the difference between a gift and a transfer, and it is the difference between an hour that costs your daughter something and an hour that does not.

You are looking at a gift that comes from outside the household entirely, and it has never once been taken from a person at your table. James 1:17 puts the direction as down from above rather than across from somebody, and it is the Holy Spirit who can move a thing from one column to another inside a person who has only ever had one column.

Every good gift

Now the reach of it, which is wider than people expect, and this is where a certain kind of person quietly excludes themselves.

Every good gift. Every perfect gift.

Not the important ones. Not the spiritual ones. Every. The word does not leave anything out, and it does not create a category of small ordinary goods that arrived some other way.

Which means an hour with nothing in it, on a Tuesday, in an ordinary week, is not too minor to be on that list. Bread is on that list. Sleep is on that list. A friend is. A quiet hour is.

And the second half of the verse guards it, because it is aimed at exactly the suspicion a person in your position carries. With whom is no variableness, neither shadow of turning. He does not give and then change His mind about it. There is no version where the hour is given and then held against you later.

You have a gift with no shadow of turning in it, and no hour received from Him has ever been quietly reclaimed afterward. James 1:17 attaches the giving to a Father in whom there is no variableness. The Spirit of God is the one who settles a person who has been waiting for a bill to arrive.

And here is the pastoral thing I want to say directly, because a woman who runs a subtraction is usually a woman who loves a great deal. The instinct is not greed reversed. It is love, doing arithmetic, in a system where there was only ever one place for anything to come from.

You are running the subtraction out of love, and the arithmetic has never once been evidence of anything selfish in you. The written word introduces a source outside the household rather than a rule about sharing, and His Spirit is entirely able to change a sum without correcting the heart that was doing it.

Say where it came from, out loud

Now the practical part, and it is one sentence and it goes before the hour rather than after it.

Before the hour starts, say out loud where it came from.

Something plain. This came down. Nobody paid for this.

Say it before, not after, because the whole difficulty is anticipation. A person who takes an hour and then tries to enjoy it spends the whole sixty minutes arguing with the arithmetic. A person who settles the source first is not arguing about anything, because the question was answered before it was asked.

And say it out loud rather than thinking it, for the same reason a person says vows out loud. A thing said in a room has more weight than a thing agreed with silently, and this one needs weight, because it is going up against a sum you have been running for years.

You are able to settle the source before the hour starts, and the arithmetic has never once had to be argued with once the direction is right. James 1:17 names the origin before it names the gift. The same Spirit who inspired that order is well able to make one sentence hold for sixty minutes.

The breakthrough

So here is what I believe is going out over somebody today.

You are receiving rather than removing, and the hour has never once been coming out of a single person you love. James 1:17 says every good gift cometh down from the Father of lights. It is the Spirit of God and not my enthusiasm who moves an hour out of the subtraction column for somebody who has never had another one.

Let me guard that carefully, because a woman like this will find a way to feel accused inside about four seconds. Nothing here says you have been keeping score against your family. Nothing here says the love was misdirected or that the years of arithmetic were foolish. They were not. The sum was wrong and the love in it was right the whole way through.

And this, which is the word I came with.

You have an hour available that comes from outside the whole arrangement, and it has never once had to be paid for by anybody at your table. The written word names the direction before it names the gift, and the Holy Spirit is fully able to hand somebody sixty ordinary minutes with no invoice behind them.

Not a rearranged week. One hour. Given.

Declare this over yourself

  1. Arithmetic that says my hour comes out of somebody, you do not add up. James 1:17 says every good gift cometh down from the Father of lights, so by the Holy Spirit I take an hour nobody is paying for, in the name of Jesus.
  2. Fear of an invoice arriving later, you have no standing in this house. Scripture says there is no variableness, neither shadow of turning, and by His Spirit I receive the hour and I keep it.
  3. Father, You send it down from outside the whole arrangement rather than across the table. James 1:17 is Your own direction and not my rearranging of the week, so by Your Spirit I say where it came from out loud today, and I take it.

Why we ask you to say these out loud

The word this stands on
