Guilt Stands Me Back Up

Let me describe four minutes, and you tell me if you know them.

You sit down. Not collapse, not fall into a chair at midnight. Sit down, on purpose, in the middle of an ordinary afternoon, because there is a gap and you decided to take it.

Minute one is fine. Minute two is actually quite good.

Somewhere in minute three something arrives. It does not speak in words. It is more like a pressure behind the breastbone, a low hum that says something is wrong here, and the something that is wrong is you, sitting.

And by minute four you are up. And here is the part worth noticing: you did not get up to do anything in particular. You got up and then went looking for something to do, which is the wrong way round and tells you everything.

Nothing needed doing. Something needed answering.

I want to talk about who was asking, because I do not think it was who you assume, and I do not think you have to answer it at all.

Name what stood you up

That pressure in minute three has a name and it is worth using the right one, because the wrong name keeps a person stuck for years.

It is not conscience. Conscience is specific. Conscience says the thing you said to your sister on Thursday. Conscience names an item.

What stood you up did not name an item. It could not, because there was not one. It gave you a verdict with no charge attached, and then let you go looking for the charge yourself, which you did, and you found a cup, and you called that the reason.

That is not conscience. That is accusation, and accusation works exactly like this: it never tells you what you did. It only tells you what you are.

There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit. (Romans 8:1, King James Version)

You are living under no condemnation right now, in the chair, in minute three, and that has never once been suspended for the duration of a rest. Romans 8:1 puts the word now in the sentence rather than leaving it to a future clearance, and it is the Holy Spirit who is able to make a person feel a verdict lift in the middle of an ordinary afternoon.

The word now is doing all the work

Look at how that sentence is built, because the order of it matters.

There is therefore now no condemnation.

Not there will be. Not there could be, if a person got themselves sorted out. Now. Present tense, already settled, in the room with you at the moment you are reading this.

And notice what it does not do. It does not say there is no condemnation once the list is finished. It does not say there is no condemnation for people who have earned an afternoon off. It attaches the freedom to being in Christ Jesus and to nothing else whatsoever.

Which means the pressure in minute three is making a claim that Romans 8:1 has already answered. It is announcing a verdict that the court has already declined to give.

You have a verdict already handed down in your favor, and the hum in your chest has never once had the authority to overturn it. Romans 8:1 settles the condemnation question with the word now rather than with a condition. The Spirit of God is the one who makes a settled thing feel settled to somebody who has been arguing their own case for years.

I have watched this in rooms full of women who would fight anybody for anybody else and will not say one word in their own defense. They will stand up for a stranger at a bus stop. Ask them to stay in a chair for five minutes and they cannot do it, and they cannot tell you why.

You are worth the same defense you have spent your whole life giving other people, and that has never once been in question in heaven. Romans 8:1 makes no exception for the person doing the reading, and it is His Spirit who takes a truth a woman would preach to her friend and lets her hear it about herself.

Let the pull arrive and do not obey it

Now the practical part, and it is not complicated, but it is not comfortable either.

The pull is going to come. Say that to yourself in advance, because the surprise is half of its power. At around minute three, that pressure will arrive, and it will feel like information. It will feel like your body telling you something true.

It is not information. It is a habit with a feeling attached.

So the work is not to avoid the pull. The work is to still be sitting down thirty seconds after it arrives. That is the whole exercise. The ask is not to feel peaceful. The ask is to stay seated while not feeling peaceful, which is a completely different and a much more achievable thing.

And then it passes. That is the part nobody tells you. It genuinely passes, usually in under a minute, and on the other side of it there is a stretch of quiet that a person in this condition has not felt in a long time.

You are able to outlast that pull sitting down, and it has never once been strong enough to require obedience. Romans 8:1 removes the charge the pressure is pretending to carry. The same Spirit who raised Christ from the dead is well able to hold a woman in a chair for ninety more seconds.
