In most situations, a no ends the matter.
Somebody asks, you decline, they find another arrangement, and by the following month nobody remembers it happened.
That is not how it works in your family and I am not going to pretend otherwise.
In your family, a no does not end anything. It enters circulation. It gets mentioned at the next thing, and then at the thing after that, and by the third telling it has acquired a shape and a moral and a bit about how you have been since you moved.
And you have watched this happen to somebody else. That is the part that matters. You know exactly what it looks like from the outside, because you saw it happen to a cousin some years back, and there is a version of that cousin that lives in family conversation now and it is not the cousin.
So you say yes, and you have been saying yes, and the price of that has been going up slowly for years.
I want to look at what you are actually trying to prevent, because I think it is not the thing you believe it is.
Two limits on a very large command
Paul gives an instruction about peace, and it is the specific wording I want.
If it be possible, as much as lieth in you, live peaceably with all men. (Romans 12:18)
That is one of the most generous commands in the letter and it has two limits built into it, and Paul puts them in front rather than as an afterthought.
If it be possible. That is the first. Which is a plain acknowledgment that sometimes it is not, and that this is not always a failure of the person trying.
As much as lieth in you. That is the second, and it is the one for you. It draws a line around what a person is responsible for, and the line is your own conduct. What you say. How you say it. Whether it is gentle. Whether it is honest.
What is not inside that line is what other people do with it afterward.
You are carrying a load with a boundary on it, and the boundary was written into the command itself. Romans 12:18 sets both of its limits down before it asks for anything, and the Holy Spirit is the one who can hand a person back the part of a family that was never theirs to manage.
You are responsible for your own part and it stops there, and the line was drawn by Him rather than by you. Romans 12:18 puts two explicit limits on the command before it gives the command. The Holy Spirit is the one who makes that read as relief rather than as an excuse for carelessness.
Now hold that against what you have been doing.
This has never been an attempt to be at peace with your family. It has been an attempt to control the story they tell, which is a completely different job, and it is one nobody in Scripture is ever assigned.
The story is not preventable
Here is the thing I most want to say to you, and it is not comfortable.
The story is going to happen anyway.
Not this time, perhaps. But a family that converts absences into stories will eventually convert one of yours, and the reason is that the mechanism has nothing to do with you. It is a habit of a group, and it runs on whoever is nearest.
So the yes you gave did not prevent the story. It postponed it, at a real cost, and it bought a delay that will end at a moment you do not choose.
That is worth knowing, because it changes the arithmetic completely. If the story were genuinely preventable, then paying for it might make sense. It is not, so it does not.
You have been paying for something that was never for sale, and it was never in your power to buy. Romans 12:18 limits a person to as much as lieth in them and leaves the rest outside, and the Spirit of God is the one who can show somebody the difference between a duty and an impossibility.
What is actually inside your line
So what is left, if the story is not yours?
Quite a lot, and it is all doable.
Be kind when you say it. Say it in person or on the phone rather than by message, if that is what your family expects. Do not explain at length, because in a family like yours a long explanation is treated as material. Do not say anything about anybody else. Do not say it in a way that invites a debate.
And then, and this is the part people miss, keep showing up to everything else.
The story needs your absence to be a pattern. One no inside a year of showing up is very hard to build anything out of. One no inside a year of quiet distance builds itself.
Be not overcome of evil, but overcome evil with good. (Romans 12:21)
Two verses later, and it is the same paragraph. Overcoming here is done by conduct rather than by explanation.
You are able to answer a story with a year of showing up, and the answering was never going to be done in words. Romans 12:21 puts the overcoming in what a person does rather than in what they say about themselves. The Holy Spirit is the one who keeps somebody steady across a whole year of ordinary Sundays.
So here is what I believe is going out over somebody today.
You are not the keeper of what this family says at Christmas, and it was never handed to you to keep. Romans 12:18 draws the line at as much as lieth in you and puts everything past it outside your account. It is the Holy Spirit and not my telling who lets that arrive as freedom rather than as a shrug.
And this, which is the word I came with:
You have a peace to keep that is the size of your own conduct, and it was that size from the beginning. What is written says if it be possible, which grants outright that sometimes it is not, and the same Spirit who moved Paul to write two limits into one sentence is at the table while you read this.
Say it kindly. Then let go of what happens next, because it was never yours.
Declare this over yourself
- Story that gets told at every gathering, you are not mine to prevent. Romans 12:18 limits me to as much as lieth in me, so by the Holy Spirit I put down a job I was never given, in the name of Jesus.
- Price I have been paying for a delay, you are finished. The written word says if it be possible, which grants that sometimes it is not, and by the Holy Spirit I stop buying something that was never for sale.
- Father, You drew the line at my own conduct and You drew it Yourself. Your word says as much as lieth in you, live peaceably with all men, so by Your Spirit I say no kindly today and I keep showing up to everything else.
