Count it next time. It is usually somewhere between nine and twenty seconds.
You sit down. Actually sit, all the way back, in a real chair, in your own house. And in under half a minute somebody appears in the doorway with something that was not urgent four seconds ago and has become urgent now.
It is never anything terrible. Where is my charger. Did you call about the thing. Can you look at this. Is there any more of the good bread.
And here is what nobody in your family has ever noticed, because it is genuinely invisible from where they stand: standing up, you are working, and a working person is not interrupted. Sitting down, you are available, and an available person is a resource.
So the household has learned, without a single person deciding it, that the chair is a green light.
Which produces a completely reasonable conclusion in a person over about fifteen years, and the conclusion is this: sitting down costs more than staying on my feet. And it does. Measurably. On your feet you get one task. In the chair you get four requests and no rest, so the arithmetic says stay standing, and you have been obeying that arithmetic ever since.
I want to say two things about this, and neither of them is that your family is taking from you. They are not.
The word in that verse is confidence
There is a verse in Isaiah that people quote for the quiet half and skip for the second half, and the second half is the one that speaks to a kitchen like yours.
For thus saith the Lord GOD, the Holy One of Israel; In returning and rest shall ye be saved; in quietness and in confidence shall be your strength: and ye would not. (Isaiah 30:15, King James Version)
In quietness and in confidence shall be your strength.
Confidence. Not calm. Not silence. Confidence, sitting right there beside quietness as though the two were a pair, which in a house full of people they absolutely are.
Because you do not lack quiet. You have had plenty of chances at quiet. What you lack is the confidence to be seen at rest by people who read a seated person as an open door, and that is a different problem entirely and it needs a different word.
You are carrying the quietness half already, and the confidence half has never once been something you had to feel before you could act on it. Isaiah 30:15 pairs the two in one line rather than treating quiet as the whole of it, and it is the Holy Spirit who supplies the second half to somebody who has been trying to manage on the first.
And ye would not
Now the ending of that verse, which is four words long and lands like a hand on a shoulder.
And ye would not.
That is not a rebuke shouted from a distance. Read the whole of it again and hear the tone. God offers returning, rest, quietness, confidence and strength, all of it, freely, to a people who were exhausting themselves running for help in every direction. And then, sadly rather than angrily: and ye would not.
The tragedy in that sentence is not that they were bad. It is that it was there, and it was offered, and it went untaken.
I have watched that in my own family and in a hundred kitchens since. Rest sitting on the table like a dish nobody serves themselves from, not because anybody forbade it, but because taking it in front of everybody feels like a claim a person is not sure they are allowed to make.
You are looking at something already set out for you, and it has never once been withheld from the person in that kitchen. Isaiah 30:15 has the Lord GOD offering it in His own words rather than granting it on request. The Spirit of God is the one who makes an offer that old feel like it is addressed to a particular Tuesday evening.
Let me guard something here, because a Latin household will hear this faster than I can say it and will hear it wrong. Nothing in this is a complaint about your people. The requests are not exploitation. They are what a family sounds like when it is close, and a house where nobody asks you for anything is a much sadder house than yours.
You are loved by every person who comes through that doorway, and their asking has never once been the evidence of anything else. The written word calls the strength a gift rather than a boundary won in an argument, and it is His Spirit who lets somebody rest without having to think worse of anybody to do it.
The sentence that fixes it is three words long
Now the practical part, and I promise you it is smaller than the fifteen years suggest.
You do not have to explain. You do not have to announce a new policy at dinner, and please do not, because a policy announced at dinner is a policy that gets tested at dinner.
The whole thing is one sentence, said from the chair, without getting up.
In ten minutes.
That is it. Not no. Not a lecture about how nobody in this house ever lets me sit down, which is true and which will start something. Just: in ten minutes. Then stay in the chair.
It works because it does not refuse anybody. The charger gets found, the thing gets looked at, the bread question gets answered. It simply stops the chair from being a green light, and it does it without one word of conflict, and after about the fourth time people stop testing it because there is nothing to push against.
You are able to hold a chair with three words, and it has never once required a confrontation with anybody you love. Isaiah 30:15 puts strength in quietness and confidence rather than in volume. The same Spirit who inspired that line is well able to steady a person saying four small words from a seated position.
So here is what I believe is going over somebody in a full house tonight.
You are free to be seen resting, and the chair has never once been a promise you made to the room. Isaiah 30:15 names confidence alongside quietness as the shape of the strength. It is the Spirit of God and not my saying it who puts steel into a person who has been standing up for fifteen years to avoid a conversation.
And let me hold that carefully, because this is the exact spot where a message like this gets turned into a grievance. Nothing here is a case against your family. Nothing here says you have been used. The people asking are the people you would give anything for, and none of that is changing tonight.
And this, which is the word I came with.
You have a rest that was set out in front of you a very long time ago, and it has never once been waiting for the house to get quieter. The written word offers it in the middle of a nation running in every direction at once, and the Holy Spirit is fully able to hand it to somebody in a kitchen with a card game going on four feet away.
Not a quieter house. Ten minutes. Tonight, in the chair.
Declare this over yourself
- Chair that everybody reads as a green light, you are not a signal. Isaiah 30:15 says in quietness and in confidence shall be your strength, so by the Holy Spirit I sit and I stay sat, in the name of Jesus.
- Fear of being seen at rest in my own house, you have no say in this room. Scripture sets the strength in confidence as much as in quiet, and by His Spirit I take ten minutes in front of everybody with nothing to explain.
- Father, You set it out and You said ye would not, and I do not want that said over me. Isaiah 30:15 is Your own offer and not my request, so by Your Spirit I take the rest tonight, and I take it sitting down where they can all see me.
