In my family, an absence is never only an absence.
If a chair is empty at a table, somebody notices, and somebody says something, and by the following week there is an explanation circulating that nobody checked with the person who was not there.
I say this with love, because it comes from love. A family that notices an empty chair is a family that wants you at the table. That is not a small thing and I would not trade it.
But it does something to a calendar.
Look at yours. The birthdays, and there are a lot of them. The Sunday that is not negotiable. The hospital visit that is technically shared and is mostly yours. The christening. The thing for the cousin. The other thing for the other cousin. Three generations, all of them alive, all of them real, and every single one of those events is a genuine occasion involving people who genuinely love you.
And you cannot take one off, because in your family taking one off is not a scheduling decision. It is a statement, and everybody will read it, and they will read it as being about them.
So the week stays as it is, and you go to everything, and you are tired in a way you do not have words for because you cannot even say what is wrong. Nothing is wrong. Everything on there is love.
Two men who loved each other and moved apart
Genesis 13. Abram and Lot have come up out of Egypt with a great deal of livestock, and the land will not hold both of them, and their herdsmen are fighting.
Abram is the elder and has every right to decide. Here is what he says instead.
Let there be no strife, I pray thee, between me and thee, and between my herdmen and thy herdmen; for we be brethren. Is not the whole land before thee? separate thyself, I pray thee, from me. (Genesis 13:8-9)
Read the reason he gives for the separation. For we be brethren.
Not despite being family. Because of it. The closeness is the argument for the distance, and the whole point of moving apart is to protect the thing that would be damaged if they stayed on top of each other.
That is a use of separation that most families have no category for. In a lot of families there are only two settings: together, which is love, and apart, which is a rupture. Genesis 13 has a third, and it is not a compromise between the two. It is a deliberate act of care.
You are allowed distance that is an act of love rather than a withdrawal of it, and it was never a betrayal of anybody. Genesis 13:8 gives family closeness itself as the reason to put space between two households, and the Holy Spirit is the one who can make that read as devotion instead of as coldness.
And notice how Abram does it. He does not sulk about it, he does not build a case, and he does not wait for Lot to notice the problem. He names it plainly and he offers the choice to the younger man, which he was under no obligation to do.
You are free to name a thing plainly instead of carrying it silently, and the plainness was never unkind. Genesis 13:9 has the older man say the difficult sentence first and hand the choice away. The Holy Spirit is the one who makes directness read as love in a family that is used to hints.
An absence is not a message unless you send one
Now, the thing that keeps you at every single event.
You believe that missing one would communicate something. And here is the honest part: in a family like yours, it might. Somebody might read it that way.
But there is a step in the middle that almost everybody skips. An absence only becomes a message if nothing else is said. Silence is what makes people interpret. A sentence beforehand removes the interpretation entirely, because there is nothing left to work out.
This is why the thing to change is not your attendance. It is the sentence.
I will not be at the thing on the fourteenth. I am at too much this month and I have to drop one. I will see you at the next one and I love you.
That is not an excuse and it is not a complaint about the family. It is information, given in advance, by the person it concerns, which is exactly what stops a story forming.
You have a way to be absent that says nothing about anybody, and it was never the absence itself that spoke. Genesis 13:9 has a separation announced plainly by the man who wanted it, and the Spirit of God is the one who can steady somebody who has to say a sentence like that to their own mother.
What the tiredness actually is
I want to name something else, because I do not think it has been named.
The tiredness in a calendar like yours is not caused by the number of events. Plenty of people go to as many things and are fine. It is caused by the fact that not one of them is optional, and a thing that cannot be declined stops being a gift and becomes a schedule.
That is what has changed without anybody noticing. Those events were once things you wanted to go to. Now they are things you cannot not go to, and it is the same journey and the same table and a completely different weight.
I was glad when they said unto me, Let us go into the house of the Lord. (Psalm 122:1)
Glad. That is a word for an event you could have missed and chose not to.
You have gladness available in the very same events, and it was only ever the compulsion that took it out of them. Psalm 122:1 records a man glad about a journey he chose to make. The Holy Spirit is the one who can turn an obligation back into an occasion without anybody changing the invitation.
So here is what I believe is going out over somebody today.
You are not making a statement about your family by missing one Saturday, and it was never a verdict on anybody. Genesis 13:8 has a man ask for distance and give family love itself as the reason for asking. It is the Holy Spirit and not my telling who makes that land in somebody who has never once said no to their own people.
And this, which is the word I came with:
You have permission that comes with a sentence attached, and the sentence is what keeps the love visible. What is written has Abram announce the separation plainly and offer the younger man the first choice, and the same Spirit who kept those two households at peace is in the room while you read this.
Miss one. Say so first. Nothing breaks.
Declare this over yourself
- Family calendar that reads every absence, you are not the judge here. Genesis 13:8 has distance asked for out of love rather than against it, so by the Holy Spirit I take one Saturday back, in the name of Jesus.
- Story that forms when nobody says anything, you are not going to get started. The written word has a separation announced plainly and in advance, and by the Holy Spirit I send the sentence before the silence can speak for me.
- Father, You never made my presence the proof that I love these people. Your word says separate thyself, I pray thee, and calls them brethren in the same breath, so by Your Spirit I miss one thing this month and I say so today.
