Stepping Off a Rotation Without Leaving

There is a name on a list somewhere and it is yours.

Every third Sunday. Or the second Tuesday. Or whenever they are short, which turns out to be most weeks, because the list is shorter than it was and nobody has said so out loud.

You said yes to this in a season when you had it to give. That season has ended and the list has not noticed, because a list cannot notice anything.

And here is the thing I want to get at, because I think it is the real trap. You have not stepped off, and the reason is not guilt exactly. It is that in your head, stepping off the rotation and leaving are the same decision.

Not because anybody told you that. Because you have watched it happen. Somebody comes off the list, and then they are at the back, and then they are there less, and then somebody says they have not seen them in a while. It happens quietly and it happens often enough that you have concluded it is one slope.

So you stay on the list, at a cost you have stopped measuring, because the alternative is a slope you have watched other people go down.

I want to take those two things apart, because they are not one act and they never were.

He said it out loud to God

Numbers 11. The people are complaining, the whole camp of them, and Moses says something to God that is not usually read aloud in a service.

I am not able to bear all this people alone, because it is too heavy for me. (Numbers 11:14)

I want you to sit with the fact that this is in the Bible.

It is not a moment of failure that the text disapproves of. God does not rebuke him for it. The very next thing that happens is that God arranges seventy men to carry it with him, which means the complaint was heard as a true report rather than as a lack of faith.

And notice what Moses does not do. He does not leave. He does not resign the calling, he does not go back to Midian, he does not stop being who he is. He says one true sentence about capacity, and the arrangement changes around him.

You are able to say a true thing about your own strength, and it was never going to be received as a failure. Numbers 11:14 has a man tell God plainly that a load is too heavy and get help rather than a rebuke, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes an honest sentence feel like faith instead of like giving up.

That is the whole shape of what I am asking for. Not a departure. A sentence.

You have a calling that no list is carrying, and it did not arrive attached to a Sunday morning job. Numbers 11:14 has a man state his limit out loud and remain exactly what God had made him. The Spirit of God is the one who separates a person from their duties without taking either away.

The two things are not one thing

So why does coming off a list so often lead to drifting away? Because of what usually goes with it.

A person comes off the list quietly, without saying anything, often by simply becoming unavailable. Nobody is told why. And then the awkwardness starts, and awkwardness makes a person sit further back, and sitting further back makes it easier not to come, and none of that had anything to do with the list.

It was the silence.

The drift is not caused by stepping off. It is caused by stepping off without a word, which turns an ordinary decision into something that feels like it needs to be avoided.

Which means the fix is almost stupidly small. You tell somebody. Out loud, to a face, with a reason and a time frame, and the whole slope disappears because there is nothing left that anybody has to guess about.

You have a way through that costs one conversation, and the drift was never attached to the decision itself. Numbers 11 has the load redistributed openly and in front of everybody rather than by somebody quietly disappearing, and the Spirit of God is the one who can hold a person steady in a conversation they have been avoiding for a year.

What the church actually is to you

There is one more thing under this, and I want to name it gently.

For a lot of people who serve, the serving is how they belong. It is not the only way, but it is the working one. They know where to stand, they know what they are for, and there is a job that makes the walk through the door make sense.

Take that away and there is a real question underneath, which is whether they belong there when they are not useful.

I am not going to answer that with a slogan. I want to put a verse next to it.

Now ye are the body of Christ, and members in particular. (1 Corinthians 12:27)

Members in particular. Not functions in particular. The belonging in that chapter is stated as a fact about who they are, before a single gift is listed, and the gifts come afterward as a description rather than as a qualification.

You have a place in that room that no rotation is holding up, and it was settled long before your name went on a list. 1 Corinthians 12:27 calls people members of the body before it says a word about what any of them do. The Holy Spirit is the one who can make that land in somebody who has only ever belonged by working.
