The Dread That Arrives Before the Day

I want to name a thing before I say anything else about it, because naming a thing is most of what I am here to do.

There is a weight that is present at the moment of waking. It is there before your eyes open. It has no content in it. It is not attached to a particular event that you could point at, and if somebody asked you what it was about you would have to make something up.

It is simply there, and then the day starts, and it is carried into the day.

I am going to be careful here and say plainly what this message is not. I am not telling you what that weight is, I am not naming a condition, and I am not going to assess anybody from a page. If what you carry in the mornings is heavier than what I am describing, or if it does not lift, then that is a conversation to have with somebody who can see your face, and there is no shame anywhere in that sentence.

What I am talking about is narrower. It is the ordinary morning weight that a lot of people carry and almost nobody mentions, and I want to say two things about it that I think are true and are not usually said.

The first is that it arrives before the day, which means it is not a response to the day.

The second is that it is a tenant, and a tenant can be spoken to.

A line about how long

Psalm 30 has a sentence people quote for comfort, and I want to read it as a statement about duration instead.

For his anger endureth but a moment; in his favour is life: weeping may endure for a night, but joy cometh in the morning. (Psalm 30:5)

Look at what that verse is actually doing. It is not saying the weeping is illegitimate. It says weeping may endure, which grants it. It is not arguing with the night.

What it does is put a boundary on it. For a night. And it puts something on the other side of the boundary, and the something arrives, which is a verb of movement rather than a verb of feeling.

Joy cometh. It comes. It is on its way, it is not produced, and its arrival is not conditional on the state of the person waiting for it.

You are on the other side of a boundary that was drawn by somebody else, and it was drawn before you woke into this morning. Psalm 30:5 grants the weeping and then puts a limit on its tenancy, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes that read as a fact about the arrangement rather than as a hope about a mood.

Now I want to press on the word endure, because it is the word that matters for a morning like yours.

Endure is a word about staying. It is a tenancy word. Something that endures is something occupying a space for a length of time, and the verse assigns that length: a night. Not a week, not a season, not a life.

The weight you wake with has overstayed. That is a different statement from saying it is wrong to be there, and it is a much more useful one, because you cannot argue a feeling out of existence but you can tell a tenant that the lease is up.

Naming it is most of it

Here is what I have watched work, and it is smaller than people expect.

Name it out loud in one word.

Not a diagnosis and not an explanation. One word, said aloud, before you get up. Heavy. Dread. Tired. Whatever the honest word is.

The reason this works is not mystical. A thing without a name is experienced as an atmosphere, and an atmosphere is everywhere. A thing with a name is an object, and an object has edges, and something with edges is not the whole room.

You have not made it go away. You have moved it from being the air you are breathing to being a thing sitting in the corner, and those are very different situations to wake up in.

You are able to name what is on you, and it has never once required you to explain it. Psalm 30:5 names the weeping plainly before it says anything about the morning. The Spirit of God is the one who is present when somebody says one honest word out loud in the dark.

And then, having named it, say the second half.

Weeping may endure for a night. Joy cometh in the morning. It is morning.

That is not positive thinking, which I have no time for. It is a statement about a lease.

You have a morning that is legally on the other side of the night, and the boundary was set before you got to it. Psalm 30:5 assigns the weeping a night and no longer, and the Holy Spirit is the one who lets a person speak to a thing rather than only carry it.

What this does not promise

I am going to be honest with you, because the alternative is to sell you something.

The weight may still be there afterward. It very often is. This is not a technique that clears a morning, and if I told you it was, the first time it did not work you would conclude the whole thing was false and you would be right to.

What I am handing you is not a removal. It is a second voice in the room and a boundary spoken out loud, and what I have seen is that over weeks and months the weight stops being the only thing that has said anything by the time your feet hit the floor.

We flip the switch. He sends the current. I can tell you what is written and I can tell you to say it. What happens after that is not mine to promise and I will not pretend otherwise.

You are not carrying this alone, and He was in the room before you were awake in it. Psalm 30:5 puts His favor on the same page as the weeping rather than after it. The Spirit of God is the one who is present in a morning that has not lifted yet.
