The First of It, Not the Leftovers

I want to be precise about something, because I think there is a real teaching here that gets missed by being turned into a guilt trip.

You do pray. That is the thing nobody says to the person I am talking to.

You pray at eleven at night, in bed, at the end of everything, when the house is finally quiet and there is nothing left of you. And it is genuine, and He hears it, and I am not going to stand here and imply that a tired prayer is a lesser prayer, because there is nothing in Scripture that says so.

So this is not a message about praying more.

It is a message about a category, and the category is one that Scripture takes seriously and almost nobody applies to time.

Firstfruits.

What first actually means

Proverbs 3 has an instruction most people file under money and then never think about again.

Honour the Lord with thy substance, and with the firstfruits of all thine increase. (Proverbs 3:9)

Two words in there are doing precise work.

Substance means everything a person has. And firstfruits is a technical term. It does not mean a portion, and it does not mean the best portion. It means the part that comes off first, before anybody knows how big the harvest is going to be.

That last part is the whole doctrine. A firstfruit is given in ignorance. The farmer does not yet know whether the year will be good. He gives the first of it before he has any idea what the total will be, and that is precisely what makes it an act of trust rather than an act of accounting.

Now hold that against an evening prayer.

An evening prayer is given with full information. You know how the day went. You know what is left. It is given out of a known remainder, which is a completely different act, and it is a good act and it is not firstfruits.

You are able to give in ignorance rather than out of a remainder, and it was always the ignorance that made it worth something. Proverbs 3:9 attaches the honoring to the part given before the total is known, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes that read as invitation instead of as one more standard.

I want to protect something here before we go on.

This is not a claim that your evening prayers have been worthless. Read the verse again. It says honor the Lord with thy substance, and with the firstfruits. Both. The whole and the first of it, and the first is named separately because it is a distinct thing rather than a superior one.

You have been honoring Him for years, and the honoring was real on every one of those nights. Proverbs 3:9 asks for the substance as well as the firstfruits and does not rank the two against each other. The Holy Spirit is the one who can add a thing to a person without taking away what they already had.

The order is the offering

Here is what I find genuinely striking, and it is why this is a teaching rather than a nudge.

In the firstfruits laws, the thing being given is not primarily the quantity. A sheaf is a small object. Its value is in its position in a sequence.

Which means the offering is the order.

That has a consequence that is very easy to miss. If order is the thing that can be given, then a day has an order, and therefore a day contains something that can be offered which is not a quantity of time.

Two minutes at the front of a day is a firstfruit. Forty minutes at the end of it is substance. Both are real. Only one of them is first, and first is a category God specifically names and asks for.

You have something to give that costs no additional time at all, and the giving was always about position. Proverbs 3:9 makes the firstfruits a matter of sequence rather than of size, and the Spirit of God is the one who can show a person that an order is a thing that can be handed over.

And notice what this does to the objection that you have no time. That objection is about quantity and this is not a quantity. You are not being asked for more. You are being asked for first, and first is free.

Why the tired version keeps happening

I want to say one thing about the evening habit that I do not think is often said kindly.

The reason it is at eleven is not that you deprioritized God. It is that eleven is the first moment in your day when nobody wants anything from you, and so it is the first moment when a person gets to be a person rather than a function.

That is not a spiritual failure. That is a description of a life with a lot of people in it.

But it does mean He is meeting a version of you that has already been fully spent, every single time, and He has never once been met by the version that has something in it.

They that seek me early shall find me. (Proverbs 8:17)

Early there is a word about earnestness as much as hour, and both readings point the same way.

You have a version of yourself He has never been given, and it was always going to be available at the front. Proverbs 8:17 attaches the finding to early rather than to abundant. The Holy Spirit is the one who lets a tired person see they have something left to offer that is not more effort.
