The reason you have not taken the hour is not the hour.
You could find it. You have found harder things than an hour, and you know roughly where it would sit, and you have probably had the exact square in mind for about two years.
The reason is what you think comes after it.
You imagine saying no once. Then you imagine saying it again the following week, to the same person, who has forgotten. Then a third time, with a bit of an edge on it, because three is where an edge starts. Then somebody says something at a family thing. Then it becomes a subject. Then you are the person with the rule about Thursdays.
And you play that whole sequence out, in about four seconds, and you conclude that the hour costs more than it is worth, and you do not start.
That is not laziness and it is not cowardice. It is a reasonable person doing a reasonable projection based on how they think these things go.
I am here to tell you the projection is wrong, and I can tell you why, and it is not a motivational point. It is about how a settled thing actually works.
He said it once and it held
There is a man in Nehemiah who was doing something and got asked to come and talk about it, four separate times, by people who did not want the work to carry on.
And I sent messengers unto them, saying, I am doing a great work, so that I cannot come down: why should the work cease, whilst I leave it, and come down to you? (Nehemiah 6:3, King James Version)
Look at what that sentence is and what it is not.
It is not an argument. He does not explain the value of the wall. He does not persuade anybody of anything, he does not defend his motives, and he does not ask them to agree with his priorities.
He states a fact about where he is and what he is doing, and he asks one question back, and that is all.
And notice what he never does across the whole account: he never negotiates. They send four times. He sends the same answer four times. There is no new material in it, and no escalation, and no argument, because there was never an argument to have.
You are able to state a thing without arguing for it, and no hour has ever needed to be justified to somebody who was not going to be persuaded. Nehemiah 6:3 answers with a fact and a question rather than with a case, and it is the Holy Spirit who steadies a person who has always assumed a refusal has to come with reasons.
The reasons are what start the negotiation
Here is the mechanical thing underneath this, and it is the practical heart of it.
A refusal with a reason in it is an invitation.
The moment a refusal carries the word because, the other person has been handed something to work on. They are not being difficult. They are being helpful, which is worse. They will solve the reason for you, because they like you, and then the reason is gone and there is no refusal left to give.
So then you find another reason. And now it looks like a preference, which is true, and which was never the thing being said.
That is how an hour turns into a weekly fight. Not because people are pushy. Because reasons are solvable and facts are not.
You are permitted to give a fact and stop talking, and an unexplained hour has never once been an unkind one. Nehemiah 6:3 offers no justification anybody could dismantle. The Spirit of God is the one who can hold a person's mouth shut after a short sentence, which is harder than saying it.
And I will say the encouraging half, because a person who has held a family together for years hears any talk of refusing as a threat to something. Nobody is asking you to become somebody who says no. You do not have to develop a spine, because there was never anything wrong with the one you have.
You are not being asked to change how you love anybody, and the sentence has never once been aimed at the person hearing it. The written word has him keep working while he answers rather than turn and face them, and His Spirit is entirely able to keep somebody warm while they stay put.
Once is what settles it
Now the thing I actually came to say, and it is the bit that turns out to be true and that nobody believes in advance.
You will have to say it once. Possibly twice. Then it stops.
Not because you win an argument. Because a household is a system and a system learns. After one clear unexplained instance, the hour stops being a question, and by about the third week nobody remembers there was ever a discussion, and within two months somebody in your house is telling somebody else that the hour is not available.
The four second projection you ran is wrong because it assumes every week is week one. It is not. Week one is week one. Week six is a fact about the household that everybody has absorbed.
That is what makes this worth starting. The cost is not weekly. It is one conversation, once, and it is nearly always smaller than the one you have already had in your head fifty times.
You are looking at one conversation and not at a campaign, and the weekly fight has never once existed anywhere except in the projection. Nehemiah 6:3 records the same short answer given without escalation. The same Spirit who preserved that account is well able to carry a person through a single ordinary sentence at a gate.
So here is what I believe is going out over somebody tonight.
You are one sentence away from a settled hour, and the fight you have been dreading has never once been scheduled for every week. Nehemiah 6:3 records a short answer that held without argument or escalation. It is the Spirit of God and not my encouragement who takes the dread out of a conversation that has been rehearsed for eleven years.
Let me guard that the way I would want it guarded if it were aimed at me. Nothing here says your family has been taking. Nothing here says the people who ask are a problem or that you have been weak for not starting sooner. The projection you ran was reasonable and most people would have run it.
And this, which is the word I came with.
You have one conversation ahead of you and not a campaign, and it has never once had to be won to be finished. The written word gives a man a fact and a question rather than a case to argue, and the Holy Spirit is fully able to hold somebody steady through the eleven seconds that settle a Saturday.
Not a fight. One sentence. Once.
Declare this over yourself
- Argument I have rehearsed for eleven years, you are not going to happen. Nehemiah 6:3 says I am doing a great work, so that I cannot come down, so by the Holy Spirit I say it once and I stop talking, in the name of Jesus.
- Projection that puts a fight on every Saturday, your arithmetic is wrong. Scripture records the same short answer holding without escalation, and by His Spirit I take the hour and let week six be a fact instead of a question.
- Father, You gave him a sentence with no reason in it that anybody could take apart. Nehemiah 6:3 is Your own record of it and not my excuse for being blunt, so by Your Spirit I say my own sentence once this week, and I leave it there.
