An Hour When Everybody Depends on You

Somebody has to know where everything is.

Somebody has to know which appointment is on Thursday, and what the dog eats, and which of the three of them is not speaking to the other one this week, and where the spare key is, and when the thing at the school is.

In most families that is one person, and if you are reading this, it is probably you.

And the strange part is that nobody assigned it. There was no conversation. It settled on the person who noticed first, years ago, and it has been added to steadily ever since, and everybody in that house would say they are grateful and mean it.

So when somebody suggests an hour that belongs to nobody, you do not hear a scheduling suggestion. You hear something much stranger and much harder.

You hear a question about whether you are allowed to exist separately from the arrangement.

Because if everything runs through you, then an hour where nothing runs through you is not a gap in a week. It is a gap in the mechanism, and you have been the mechanism so long that you cannot picture yourself standing next to it.

I want to look at one sentence with you, because there is somebody in it doing the same job on a much larger scale, and what He says about it is not what people expect.

He calls the load real before He does anything about it

Here is the line, and almost everybody quotes the second half.

Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. (Matthew 11:28, King James Version)

Look at the middle of it.

all ye that labour and are heavy laden

That is a description and it is not a criticism. He does not say all ye that have organized yourselves badly. He does not say all ye that took on more than was yours. He names a state without one word of blame attached to it, and He names it accurately.

Heavy laden. Loaded down. Carrying a weight that is genuinely a weight.

Anybody who has ever run a household knows how rare it is to be described accurately without being corrected in the same breath. Most advice arrives with a small suggestion that a better organized person would not be in this position.

He does not do that. He describes, and then He invites.

You are accurately described in that sentence, and no part of the load you carry has ever been called your own fault by Him. Matthew 11:28 names the labor and the weight without attaching a single correction, and it is the Holy Spirit who lets somebody hear an accurate description as kindness rather than as an assessment.

The rest is given to the one still carrying

Now something in the structure of the verse that matters enormously for a person in your position.

He does not tell them to put it down first.

Read the invitation again and notice who it is addressed to. It is issued to people while they are still loaded. The rest is offered to somebody who has not yet been relieved of anything, and there is no preliminary step in which the load is discharged and then the person qualifies.

That is the thing this position makes almost impossible to believe. Every version of rest a person here imagines involves the arrangement being solved first. Somebody else learning the system. A season where less is happening. A point at which it would be safe.

That point is not in the verse. The verse skips it entirely.

You are invited while still carrying every bit of it, and the invitation has never once been waiting for the arrangement to be solved. Matthew 11:28 addresses people who are heavy laden at the moment of speaking rather than people who have set something down. The Spirit of God is the one who makes an unconditional invitation feel available to somebody who has never had an unconditional anything.

And let me say the other half plainly, because a person who holds a house together has usually been praised for it and cannot tell whether the praise is the point. The load is not who you are. It is a thing you are carrying, and the two have been welded together for so long that pulling them apart feels like a threat to both.

You are a person and not a mechanism, and no household has ever run on somebody's identity rather than on their work. The written word speaks to the laden as people rather than as functions, and His Spirit is entirely able to separate a person from a system they built without dismantling either.

One thing, one person, one hour

Now the practical part, and it is deliberately not an hour off.

An hour off is not available to you yet and pretending otherwise wastes your time. Here is what is available.

Hand one specific thing to one specific person for one hour.

Not the household. One thing. The dog, the phone, whether the middle one gets picked up, the pot on the stove. Name it out loud to an actual named person, give them the whole of it including the deciding, and then do not check.

The not checking is the entire exercise. Handing something over while remaining available for questions is not handing it over, it is delegating with a rope attached, and everybody involved can feel the rope.

Sixty minutes. One thing. No checking.

What you are testing is not whether they can do it. They can, and you know that, and that was never the question. What you are testing is whether you can be a person for an hour while the mechanism runs without you, and the answer will surprise you, and it will be uncomfortable for about the first twenty minutes.

You are able to hand one thing over completely, and the household has never once needed a rope attached to survive an hour. Matthew 11:28 issues its invitation to the still loaded rather than to the unburdened. The same Spirit who spoke it is well able to hold somebody steady through twenty uncomfortable minutes of not checking.
