Every Hour Already Has a Name on It

Look at the coming week and try to find an hour with nothing on it.

Now notice something about how that search goes. You are not looking for a free hour. You are looking for an hour where the person attached to it would be all right about being moved.

Because there is a name on every one of them, and the names are not tasks. They are people. Your mother on Tuesday. The one who needs collecting. The dinner that is not a dinner, it is your brother, who has been having a hard year. The thing at the school. Your wife, on Friday, which is the only evening the two of you have.

And here is the thing that separates a household like yours from a person who is simply busy. You would not remove any of them. If somebody handed you a pen and told you to cut one, you would hand the pen back.

That is not a scheduling problem. It is a full week made entirely of love, and there is no bad item in it to take out.

So every honest attempt to find an hour has failed, because the search itself is wrong. Looking for a gap in an allocated week is looking for the one thing that cannot be there.

The hour does not come out of the allocation. It comes out before it.

He sent them away first

There is a moment in Matthew that is usually read for what comes after it, and the sentence itself is the part I want.

And when he had sent the multitudes away, he went up into a mountain apart to pray: and when the evening was come, he was there alone. (Matthew 14:23, King James Version)

Read the order.

Sent them away. Then went up. Then alone.

The first clause is doing work that people walk straight past. The space did not appear. Nothing opened up. There was no gap in the day into which He stepped, and the crowd did not thin out on its own.

He made it. Deliberately, as an act, before the going up.

That is a completely different operation from finding time, and everybody in a full household has been attempting the wrong one for years.

You are able to make the hour rather than find it, and a week that full has never once been going to open a gap by itself. Matthew 14:23 puts a deliberate act before the going apart rather than describing a lull, and it is the Holy Spirit who makes an ordinary decision look like something a person is allowed to take.

And notice when He did it

Now the timing, which is the practical hinge and which changes everything about how this is done.

Look at what had just happened. He had fed them. Five thousand of them, and the twelve baskets, and it is the verse immediately before. The need had been met. Nobody went away hungry so that He could go up a mountain.

He did not take the hour out of the middle of the crowd's need. He completed what was in front of Him, and then, at the seam, before the next thing began, He made the space.

That is the answer to the whole difficulty. The hour is not taken out of an allocated week. It is taken at the seam, before the allocating happens, which in most households is Sunday night.

By Wednesday every hour has a name on it and taking one means removing a person. On Sunday night the names have not been assigned yet, and an hour taken then costs nobody anything, because nobody has been promised it.

Same hour. Completely different price. The only variable is when it is taken.

You are able to take it at the seam, and it has never once had to be taken out of somebody's promised evening. Matthew 14:23 places the withdrawing between a finished thing and a next thing rather than in the middle of either. The Spirit of God is the one who shows a person a door they have walked past for years.

And let me say the thing a man in a house like yours needs said out loud. None of this is a criticism of the week. Your mother on Tuesday is right. Friday with your wife is right. The brother having a hard year is right and you should keep going.

You are not being asked to give up one person on that calendar, and the week has never once been the thing that was wrong here. The written word has Him meet the need in full before He goes up, and His Spirit is entirely able to add an hour without subtracting a single name.

Sunday night, before anything else

So here is the practical part, and it has to happen at a specific time to work at all.

Sunday night. Before you look at anything.

Not after the calendar is reviewed. Before. Before the messages, before the reminders, before anybody says what is happening on Thursday. The very first thing that touches next week is you putting one hour into it with no name on it.

Then let the rest of the week be allocated around it, the way it always is, by all the people it is always allocated by.

They will not notice, because there is nothing to notice. An hour that was never on offer is not an hour anybody was refused.

And write it down where the week lives, not in your head, because a household allocates from the written version and an hour that only exists in a man's head has already been given away.

You are able to put it in before the week is written, and no hour has ever needed to be taken back from somebody who was already counting on it. Matthew 14:23 has the making of the space precede the going apart. The same Spirit who recorded that order is well able to hold a man to a decision made on a Sunday night about a Thursday.
